The Spring Conference was held on May 13, 2018 at Yotsubashi Hall in Tokyo.

TM Makoto Yuba and TM C J Marks both made the phenomenal speeches as the representatives of Division F.

 

Moreover it was really great that TM C J Marks was awarded the 3rd Place.

Here is the interview to share with you.

 

2018年春季大会が５月１３日に東京の四ツ橋ホールで開催されました。

弓場周さんとC JマークスさんがディビジョンFを代表して素晴らしいスピーチを披露されました。

I heard from you that your purpose was to make a speech on the stage at the Spring Conference, and you made it.

What were you concerned about achieving that purpose during the contests such as the club-level, the Area, and the Division Contest?

 

TM C J Marks:

As a first year Toastmaster, I joined Toastmasters in June of 2017, I knew that I had a lot to learn. 

At every stage of the competition(s) I simply wanted to have fun, enjoy the process, learn, help others along the way and represent my family, my clubs and myself well.

As long as I did these things to the best of my ability I was never concerned about the results of the competitions.

What was the most difficult thing you faced before the Spring Conference?

How did you overcome it?

TM C J Marks: 

Division F has a lot of great speakers. I knew that as a first year Toastmaster I had a lot to learn and simply GETTING to the Spring Conference stage would be quite an accomplishment.

​

It was never about "overcoming" these things because these are great speakers and we all help and support each other in the process. This is actually how I was able to make it to the Spring Conference; the support, motivation and inspiration of my fellow Toastmasters; LISTENING to their input, being calm, confident, relaxed and simply having fun was how I was able to achieve my goal.

What is the next goal?

TM C J Marks:

Wow that is a good question. After the Spring Conference my Brother-In-Law asked me a similar question over dinner.

Honestly, the purpose now is what it was when I first joined Toastmasters. I want to help others become better; to help them realize their potential, overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Personally, for myself, I want to improve as a public speaker. The competitions are cool but more importantly is reaching people with a solid message and having a positive impact on the people that hear my words.

As long as I am able to do these things...I will be fine.

春季大会のステージでスピーチをしたいとおっしゃっていましたが、それが叶いました。そのステージに立つためにそれまでのコンテスト（クラブレベル、エリア、ディビジョン）ではどのようなことを考えていましたか。

​

TM C J マークス：

トーストマスターズには昨年の６月に入会し、1年目ですので学ぶことがたくさんあると思っていました。春季大会出場までのそれぞれのコンテストではその過程を楽しみ、学び、そしてその中で他のメンバーをサポートしたいと思っていました。また家族や所属クラブを代表して参加しているという気持ちもありました。

このように自らベストを尽くしていましたので、コンテスト結果には全くこだわっていませんでした。

春季大会前に直面したことで、一番難しかったことは何でしょうか。またどのように解決されましたか。

​

TM C J マークス:

ディビジョンFには素晴らしいスピーカーがたくさんいます。

入会して最初の年ですので学ぶことがたくさんあることはわかっていましたし、春季大会に出場すること自体、かなりの成果であると感じていました。

​

素晴らしいスピーカー達とはお互いに励まし、助け合ってきましたので、決して何かに「打ち勝つ」という感じではなかったです。

彼らのサポート、熱意、インスピレーションがあったからこそ春季大会出場につながったと思っています。彼らの提案に耳を傾け、冷静に、自信をもち、リラックスして過程を楽しむことで春季大会出場という目標が達成できました。

いい質問です！

春季大会の後、夕食時に義理の弟からも似たような質問を受けました。

正直なところ、目的は今もトーストマスターズに入会した時と変わっていません。他のメンバーがより良くなるためのサポート、彼らが自分の可能性に気づき、困難を乗り越え、目標を達成していく過程をサポートしていきたいのです。

私個人としてはパブリックスピーカーとしてさらに上を目指したいと思っています。コンテストはそれ自体素晴らしいですが、内容のある確かなメッセージを伝え、私のスピーチを聞いてくださる方々にポジティブな影響をもたらすことがより重要です。お伝えしたようなことが実践できれば、本望です。
